Local SEO for a Connecticut paddlesports retailer.

- Consulting — SEO and local search
The brief
Collinsville Canoe & Kayak is a long-running independent paddlesports retailer in Connecticut — New England's largest specialty paddle shop, family-owned since 1990. Strong product story, real community presence, but a website missing the signals Google looks for when deciding which local businesses to surface. People searching "kayak shop CT" or "kayak rentals near me" weren't finding them as easily as they should have been. A focused, fixed-fee engagement to fix that.
The results
SEO is usually a slow build — but within weeks the site was ranking at or near the top of Google for the searches that matter most to the business. Here's where it stood when the project wrapped.
Five of the highest-intent searches in the state now return Collinsville Canoe & Kayak as the #1 organic result — ahead of directories and competitors:
- #1 — "kayaks in CT"
- #1 — "canoes in CT"
- #1 — "kayak shop Connecticut"
- #1 — "canoe shop Connecticut"
- #1 — "kayak rentals CT"
- #2 — "paddleboard rentals CT" · #3 — "paddle boards CT" · #4 — "kayak lessons CT"
- #6 — "best places to kayak in CT" — the brand-new content page, already on page one against statewide sites
Rankings checked May 29, 2026 for Connecticut-based searches, organic results only (paid ads excluded), with search personalization off.
What we did
A four-week engagement, delivered entirely within the constraints of their Rain POS platform:
- Business information for Google — added LocalBusiness structured data so Google has the correct address, hours, phone, services, and 4.7★ rating in a format it fully trusts, strengthening Maps and local results.
- Search Console & sitemap — set up Google Search Console and submitted the sitemap so every page gets crawled and performance is measurable going forward.
- Titles, descriptions & headings — rewrote unique, keyword-aware titles and descriptions across eight key pages (Homepage, Rentals, Kayaks, Canoes, Paddleboards, Adult Lessons, Paddling Parties, Who We Are) and refreshed page headings where the platform allowed.
- Shop category copy — added keyword-rich intro copy to the Kayaks, Canoes, and Paddleboards category pages to compete for searches like "kayak shop Connecticut."
- New content — published the "Best Places to Kayak & Canoe in CT" page, with a mapped paddle-spot guide, targeting people searching where to paddle in the state.
- Trust signals — added a customer-reviews section to the Why Buy From Us page and a highlights strip on the homepage, featuring real 5-star Google reviews (4.7★ from 377).
- Bonus — product data for Google — added Product structured data across the entire catalog (447 items, validated, zero errors) so individual boats and gear become eligible to show price and availability right in search results.
What happens from here
The technical fixes and content are live and already ranking. The product listings keep expanding as Google re-crawls the catalog over the following weeks, and from there it compounds — more visibility leads to more traffic, more reviews, and stronger rankings over time. Natural next steps, if the shop wants to keep building: per-product reviews to unlock star ratings on products, a Google Merchant Center feed for the Shopping tab, and — longer term — a migration off Rain POS to a platform like Shopify.
How it was structured
Fixed-fee engagement. No hidden costs, no surprise upcharges, no monthly retainer sneaking in afterward. The shape of the work was right for a small business: focused scope, clear deliverables, and a written, plain-English summary of every change at the end.
